The Russell D. Taylor Award for Design Excellence

Sponsored by Phillips Fox

Each year the AAPC offers an Award to an individual, for excellence in urban design. This Award, named after the late Russell D. Taylor (founder of Taylor Burrell Barnett and cornerstone of town planning in WA in the 1960’s and 1970’s) encourages the pursuit of professionalism, quality and of course excellence in planning in urban and rural contexts. It is the first and pre-eminent Award in urban design for an individual recipient in Western Australia.

The AAPC annually calls for Award nominations of town planning and urban design practitioners. Nominees must be members of the Planning Institute of Australia. Nominees are considered by an independent Judging Panel, and comprise eminent practitioners in Academia, Urban Development, Public Service and Architecture. The judges apply high standards in their deliberations, and have occasionally withheld making an award if it has been believed none of the nominees are of a suitable quality. Past winners of the Award are:

  • Don Newman (1999 – project: Walkaway Townscape Plan)
  • Peter Ciemitis (1999 – project: Glendalough Station Precinct Urban Design and Implementation Study)
  • Evan Jones (2000 – project: Liveable Neighbourhoods Community Design Code)
  • Graham Meredith (2003 – project: Harrington Park, Sydney)
  • Allen Blood (2003 – project: Southern Suburbs District Structure Plan – City of Cockburn)
  • Mike Day (2004 – project: Ellenbrook)

The Award, sponsored by Phillips Fox, is made at the dinner of the annual Planning Institute of Australia State Conference, and provides an opportunity for the industry to showcase and celebrate its exemplary practitioners.

The Association also installs a commemorative plaque on the site of the respective project as a lasting and public recognition of achievement.
